“Your sensitivity to hormonal fluctuations causes your PMDD, but if you’re also sensitive to histamines, then lowering your histamine levels can really make a difference.”
Can OTC allergy medication help relieve PMDD symptoms?
If you suffer from PMDD then you’ve probably heard women raving about Claritin helping with their symptoms. So, what’s the deal with that?
Can Claritin and other over-the-counter allergy relief medications help with your PMDD?
Could it be that easy? Well, yes. And let me tell you why…

"My name is Charisma Whitefeather and I believe that Life’s Too Short to Be Miserable!
I suffered from PMDD, depression, anxiety and out-of-control emotions for years and in this blog I share what works for me and the women I support."
Thank you for being here.
So, what’s the connection between PMDD and allergy medication?
Well, the connecting link is histamines.
Histamines are organic compounds involved in your body’s immune responses, and they regulate physiological functions in the gut and they also act as neurotransmitters for the brain, spinal cord, and, here’s the kicker, your uterus.
Yepp, histamines regulate things like your sex drive...and your ovulation!
So the thing is, just before you ovulate and before your period starts, that’s when the histamine levels in your body spike.
And high histamine levels are responsible for brain fog, nausea, insomnia, headaches, breast tenderness and irritability. Yes, irritability!
Do any of those symptoms sound familiar?
Hello Hell Week!
Your sensitivity to hormonal fluctuations causes your PMDD, but if you’re also sensitive to histamines, then lowering your histamine levels can really make a difference.
As you know, I’m all about natural remedies, so I’m not a big fan of Claritin or any of these other medications for allergy relief.
There are natural ways to lower your histamine levels
By taking supplements like magnesium, B6, SAM-E
And if you’re not sure which other supplements to take for your PMDD, I have a really great resource for you: a PMDD supplement guide, you can download it here for free.
I'll share the link at the bottom of this page.
By cutting down on foods with high histamine levels
Foods high in histamine are tomatoes, avocados and fermented foods like sauerkraut and kombucha. And dairy: cow’s milk and cheese.
Oh no! No milk?! No cheese??
Are you seriously asking people to stop eating cheese, Charisma?!?!
I get it, I used to love cheese. But let's get serious for a moment, cutting out dairy doesn't seem half as bad as going through Hell Week every month. Am I right?!
And there you have it: PMDD relief by lowering your histamine levels.
Give it a try and let me know how it goes.
So, there you have it, histamines can affect your PMDD symptoms.
Don't forget to download your PMDD Relief Supplement Guide.
Love and peanut butter,
Charisma❤️
